Core concepts

The preview above is a real automation in miniature. A trigger (someone comments GUIDE) starts it, an action (a DM with a button) answers them, and the next step saves them to your contacts. Every automation in Askenly is built from those three parts. You connect Instagram once, choose a goal, and Askenly runs the steps on its own servers, day and night, while you watch the results and step into the conversations that need you.

See Automations for every trigger and step, or start from one of the Templates.

Key terms

The words used across the app and these guides.

Askenly terms
TermWhat it means
WorkspaceYour business in Askenly. It holds your Instagram accounts, team, automations, contacts, bookings and billing. Data never crosses between workspaces.
ChannelA connected social account. Instagram Business and Creator accounts today; Facebook and WhatsApp are coming soon.
AutomationA set of steps that runs on its own when its trigger fires, such as sending a DM with a link.
TriggerWhat starts an automation: a comment with your keyword, a reply to your Story or a DM.
KeywordThe word people comment or send, such as GUIDE or PRICE. Capitals and surrounding words don’t matter.
GoalThe kind of automation: Deliver something, Book an appointment, Grow your audience, Get more sales or Answer questions. Each goal counts its own result.
Hand-offMoving a chat to a person. The chat goes to Assigned in the Inbox with the reason, and automations pause for that person for 24 hours.
ContactSomeone who talked to your automations, booked or was added by hand, with their whole history.
Booking pageYour public page where people book your services, also used by Book automations in the DM.

How a conversation flows

The same path runs under every automation, whatever its goal.

  1. Someone starts it

They comment your keyword on a post or Reel, reply to your Story, or send a DM. Instagram only lets businesses message people who contacted them first, so every automation begins here.

  2. Askenly replies in seconds

The opening DM goes out from your own Instagram account, in your words, usually with a button to tap.

  3. The next step follows

The tap or reply sends the content, offers three open times, asks for an email or answers the question, depending on the goal.

  4. The person is saved

They become a contact with the conversation, any email or booking, and the source that brought them in.

  5. A person steps in when needed

If they ask for someone, or the automation can’t help, the chat moves to your Inbox and automations pause for them.

  6. You see what it produced

Each automation’s page shows DMs delivered, qualified leads and its goal result, and Analytics shows the whole picture.

What you can automate

Every automation starts from one of five goals. You can run several at once, on different posts and keywords.

Deliver something

Send a guide, link, playlist or unique discount code to everyone who comments or replies. Clicks on your link buttons are counted per person.

Book an appointment

Offer your next three open times in the DM. A reply of 1, 2 or 3 books it, and the confirmation and reminders go out by email.

Grow your audience

Turn Story replies and comments into followers, with an optional follow ask, tag-a-friend comments, Story-mention unlocks and giveaways.

Get more sales

Ask for an email in the DM and follow up with a short email sequence that stops on a click, a purchase or a reply (Growth and Scale).

Answer questions

Reply to common questions from your saved answers, with tolerance for typos, and hand anything else to a person.

Schedule posts

Publish posts, carousels, Reels and Stories at the time you pick, with an automation that starts the moment each post goes live.

Home for a new workspace: the Get started cards tick themselves off as you set things up, next to Business Momentum.

Who uses Askenly

Creators use it when a Reel takes off and hundreds of people comment for the link. Every one of them gets it within seconds, at 3am as well as at noon, and the creator spends the evening on the next video instead of pasting links.

Coaches and consultants use Book an appointment so a comment turns into a discovery call without a single “does Tuesday work?” message. Salons and studios use it for the same reason, plus Answer questions for “how much is a cut?” and “where are you?”.

Online shops answer “link?” and “how much?” with the product page as a button, and use Get more sales to follow up by email with people who didn’t buy straight away. Agencies run several client accounts from one workspace, or give each client a workspace of their own.

How Askenly stays inside Instagram’s rules

Askenly connects through Instagram’s official API with Instagram’s own sign-in, so it never sees your password. It only messages people who contacted you first and only within 24 hours of their last message, which is the window Instagram allows. Follow-ups that would land later are skipped.

Messages go out at a steady pace within your plan’s per-minute rate, and each one is sent at most once: if Instagram doesn’t confirm a send, Askenly checks before trying again instead of sending a duplicate. Anyone who sends STOP gets no more automated messages until they send START.

People stay in charge

Automations handle the repetitive part. When a conversation needs judgement, Askenly hands it over: someone asks for a person, a question has no saved answer, no booking time suits, or a list of codes runs out. The chat arrives in the Inbox with its reason, owners and admins get an email, and automations stay quiet for that person for 24 hours while you talk.

AI in the Inbox only drafts. A suggested reply fills the composer with an answer written from your own business details, and you decide whether to send it. On paid plans you can let the business assistant answer questions on its own; anything your profile doesn’t cover still goes to a person.

Your data

Everything in a workspace belongs to that workspace. Database rules check membership on every read and write, so nobody in another workspace can see your contacts, chats or bookings, and Instagram access tokens are stored encrypted where no browser can read them.

Disconnecting an Instagram account deletes its token and keeps its history, so you can connect it again later and pick up where you left off. Contacts and bookings can be exported as CSV files whenever you need them in another tool, and Remove permanently deletes one disconnected account’s records, 7 days after you confirm.

Your first week

A realistic order for setting up, one small step a day.

  1. Day 1

Connect and send your first DM

Sign up, answer the three onboarding questions, connect Instagram and publish a Deliver something automation on a post that already gets comments. Test it from a second account.

  2. Day 2

    Fill in your business profile

Add your description, hours and business knowledge in Settings → Business profile. Booking, Inbox drafts and the business assistant all read from it.

  3. Day 3

    Add a second goal

If people ask when you’re free, set up a service and a Book an appointment automation. If they ask the same questions, add Answer questions.

  4. Day 4

    Invite your team

Invite the people who answer DMs as members, and check that owners and admins get hand-off emails.

  5. Day 5

    Schedule next week’s posts

Plan posts in Schedule and link an automation to each, so the first comments get a reply as soon as they go live.

  6. Day 7

    Read the results

Open Analytics and each automation’s page. Keep what works, and change one message or keyword where taps are low.

Introduction questions

Do I need any technical skills?

No. You build automations by filling in a form with a live preview, and connecting Instagram is a sign-in on Instagram’s own screen.

Will my followers know it’s automated?

Messages come from your own account in your own words. Write them the way you’d reply yourself, and step in from the Inbox when a real conversation starts.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. The Free plan needs no card and includes 3 live automations and 1,000 DMs a month.

What if I only use Instagram for a few posts a month?

That’s enough. One automation on one post is a good start, and it keeps working on that post for as long as people comment.
